Guifang(Chinese: 鬼方; Wade–Giles: Kuei-fang; lit. ‘Demon Territory’) , an ancient Chinese country, existed in the Shang Dynasty(1600–1046 BCE) It is located in northern Shaanxi, northwestern Shanxi and western Inner Mongolia. Guifang Country is a historical term that is rarely heard by most people. It is not a confirmed and complete historical entity. It is not a simple national imagination about the narrative of Northern China. There are only a few historical records and a small amount of historical evidence about the historical records of the Guifang Country. Therefore, the Guifang Country is more like a historical remnant that is excluded and dispelled in the historical narrative. These historical remnants of the Guifang Country have inspired countless mythological imaginations of later generations. The remnants of these imaginations exist in folk oral myths, religious rituals and folk culture.
The place where I was born is within the scope of the possible existence of the Guifang Country referred to in historical materials. From small to large, those fragmented legends, vague mythological imaginations, and constantly rewritten collective cultural memories in life have always accompanied me. They affect the way I see the world and know the world at certain important moments.
The ‘ Guifang People’ recorded in historical materials have pious and complex beliefs in ghosts and gods. This belief structure does not seem to have really disappeared. It continues to penetrate into the current life experience in a more secret way. I try to use these weak but stubborn traces as clues to reconstruct an imaginary space about ‘Guifang’ through the field investigation of ‘Guifang’ and the re-view and interpretation of relevant folk culture and historical relics.
In this reshaped world, the logic of history is weakened. Mythology has become the main way of narration. There is no clear human-centered order here. Instead, it is the flowing relationship between gods and ghosts, nature, the sun, stars and the moon.
